The following table explains which species youth are allowed to hunt, with an appropriate license. Nonresidents up to 16 years old may purchase resident and junior licenses, except nonresidents are not eligible to apply for a Michigan elk license, including nonresident youth.
Youth Hunting Rules
Youth Early Antlerless Firearm September 20 – 23, 2011
The Youth Early Antlerless Firearm season will be open on all lands within DMU 486 with the appropriate public- or private-land antlerless license or Deer Management Assistance (DMA) permit valid for that DMU.
Youth Firearm Deer Hunting September 24 & 25, 2011
For youth 10 and 11 years old, valid licenses for this two-day hunt include a combination or antlerless license, and only archery equipment may be used. For youth 12-16 years old, and qualifi ed veterans with disabilities, valid licenses include a combination, firearm or antlerless deer license. During this two-day hunt only, a firearm or combination license may be used for an antlered or antlerless deer. A Deer Management Assistance (DMA) permit may also be used to take one antlerless deer only, if issued for the area/land upon which hunting. Archery and junior archery deer licenses are not valid for this hunt. The bag limit for this season is one deer. Also see Firearm Hunting Rules for Youth Hunters.
The following restrictions apply to youth hunters who participate in any firearm deer season:
Youths 10-11 years of age during the firearm seasons are limited to archery-only equipment, using an antlerless or combination license as appropriate for the given season. Archery and junior archery licenses are valid only for the archery seasons.
Youths 12-13 years of age may hunt with a firearm only on private land and Commercial Forest Land (a public-land antlerless deer license is required to hunt antlerless deer on Commercial Forest land).
All hunters under age 17 must be accompanied by a parent, guardian or someone 18 or older designated by their parent or guardian.
All hunters participating in a firearm season must wear hunter orange.
For all youth-only firearm deer seasons, an adult accompanying a youth firearm deer hunter cannot possess or carry a firearm, crossbow, or bow and arrow, except if the adult is a veteran with 100 percent disability. The adult accompanying the youth must have a deer hunting license if the youth is an apprentice hunter (see Apprentice Hunting License).
